Beyond the Cookie Jar Stash

In the past few years, there have been quite a few news articles about financial infidelity in marriages. In 2007, ABC News reported that 71% of those surveyed admitted to keeping secrets about their finances. In 2008, Dan Kadlec gave tips on the "financial rules of marriage" in his article "Don't Let Money Ruin Your Marriage."

Most recently, Forbes.com reported that 31% of Americans admitted lying to their spouses about money and the deception isn't limited to couples with money problems. "According to the survey, money deception occurs equally across income levels --- no matter if you're earning $30,000 or $300,000."

Financial cheating is far beyond any cookie jar stash in terms of damaging a marriage. But it's a good idea to be honest about all aspects of your merged finances.
